If you're in Asheville for Memorial Day weekend, Mountain Sports Festival is a sure bet for free, family-oriented entertainment. The main attraction is sporting events, including a triathlon, a paddle challenge, dodgeball, rock climbing, and bicycle racing, but there's also a ton of vendors, local food and beer, and live music all weekend.
Kids Love Mountain Sports Festival
Fun activities for kids
After watching the athletes compete, the kids will want a challenge too. Mountain Sports Festival puts kids' events center stage with family-friendly activities, such as an obstacle course, a bike race, a scavenger hunt, mini golf, and even a costume contest! If your kids excel at sidewalk art, enter them in the chalk drawing competition!
Scenic Carrier Park
Festival Village is located in Carrier Park, a sprawling greenway along the French Broad River in West Asheville. Featuring plenty of parking, paved paths, and picnic areas, Carrier Park was once Asheville Motor Speedway and still boasts a sloped race track that's now used by sports enthusiasts. The park will be filled with food and sports equipment vendors, giving you the opportunity to try out your favorite brands of sporting goods and make a personal connection with the companies.
Fun for the Whole Family
Do a little dance
The music at Mountain Sports Festival varies from bluegrass to rock n' roll, with something for everyone. On Friday night, Josh Phillips Folk Festival takes the stage with good time jams that are sure to have you dancing. Musical entertainment runs all day throughout the weekend, with the undeniably funky George Porter Jr. & the Runnin’ Pardners headlining on Saturday night.

Asheville strives to be a sustainable community
The local Tailgate Markets reflect this unique characteristic of our mountain town, one of the reasons Asheville is repeatedly praised as a favorite destination. Just recently, TripAvisor named Asheville as one of its "15 Destinations on the Rise," citing food and culture among the reasons to visit.
Going to market is fun!
Musicians show up with acoustic instruments and entertain. People bring their dogs and mill about meeting each other and chatting about the weather. Plus, eating fresh vegetables and breads is a healthy lifestyle choice. At the Tailgate Market, you'll also find locally raised meats and eggs that came straight from the farm to your basket.
Support local business
Not only do local foods taste better than store bought goods, you're also supporting community agriculture. You can extend this philosophy to nearly everything you do in Asheville, such as supporting local business by booking an Asheville vacation rental cabin from Carolina Mornings, a locally-owned and operated business for 15 years.
Plenty of opportunities
There's an Asheville Tailgate Market almost every day of the week. Check the From Here calendar for details. Wednesdays downtown at the French Broad Co-op Tailgate Market is one of the largest. If you're up for an adventure, take a scenic drive up the French Broad River to Marshall for Sundays on the Island.
In-season radishes give salad a kick, or you can whip a little something together and serve them as a side dish.

2. Play Board Games
Backgammon anyone? Maybe Scrabble is more your style. Vacation is family bonding time. Laughter, and a little competitive edge, will bring you all closer together.

4. Have a Cookie Baking Contest

5. Toss a Ball Around
It doesn't matter what kind of ball it is, what the rules are, or who wins. Just get out there and bond.
Five Kings Retreat Comes with Built-in Fun
6. Remember Charades?
And other fun and free games that aren't on the computer, like Tic-Tac-Toe, I Spy, and Hide and Seek?
7. Easy Arts & Crafts
Grab a marker and a piece of paper and draw a family portrait. We're talking stick figures. Or braid a few pieces of embroidery thread together and call it a bracelet. Or glue some macaroni to a picture frame. Arts and crafts really can be that easy, and surprisingly fun for everyone.
8. Watch a Movie
Most vacation rental cabins come with a DVD player - perfect for gathering together and watching a classic. Show the kids what your favorite movie was when you were their age. Popcorn and movie time makes for awesome family magic!

Environmentally friendly travelers who are interested in going green want two things: to travel sustainably and to protect the places they visit. Here's five fun and easy ways to protect the planet while you're on vacation.
Red Wolf, A Luxury Eco-Friendly Cabin
1. Don't Travel as Far -
The most effective way to travel sustainably is to plan a vacation that keeps you near home. Less than four hours from Atlanta and only two hours from Charlotte, the world-class resort area of Asheville is a smart vacation destination considering the high gas prices we're facing for summer. Simplify: Enjoy the Luxury of the Mountains!
2. Stay at an Eco-Friendly Carolina Mornings Vacation Rental Cabin -
Carolina Mornings is proud to be an NC Green Travel Partner, a designation awarded by the North Carolina Department of Environmental and Natural Resources. Carolina Mornings is the first vacation rental company in the state to receive the designation, part of a statewide sustainable travel recognition program called the NC Green Travel Initiative. Check out our Eco-Friendly Vacation Rental Cabins. These properties are located in numerous Asheville areas, including convenient in-town spots and mountaintop vistas.
3. Take a Hike -
Carolina Mornings has partnered with Asheville Adventure Rentals to bring you Trip in a Bag, making it easy to get on the trail. Trip in a Bag includes everything that you need to enjoy one of the many trails surrounding Asheville: a hand-drawn map with points of interest highlighted, two water bottles, trail mix and a wildflower brochure all enclosed in a comfortable backpack made from 100% recycled materials. Ask a Carolina Mornings Vacation Planner for details!
Saving the Planet One Step at a Time
4. Ride a Bike -
If you're a biking enthusiast, you already know there's a ton of awesome bike trips in and around Asheville, such as Elk Mountain and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Asheville's also friendly for casual and family bicyclers. It's a small enough urban area that you can bike from one side of town to the other on neighborhood streets! Liberty Bikes provides maps and rental bicycles if you didn't bring your own.
5. Buy Local -
Staying at a Carolina Mornings Asheville vacation rental home gives you the opportunity to cook in your own kitchen. When you go out for groceries, shop at local food stores or pick up the ingredients for dinner at a tailgate market. Also, when you're buying souvenirs to remind you of your beautiful Blue Ridge vacation, purchase items made by local artisans or sold at a locally owned store. They're on just about every corner in Asheville!

The holistic approach to pet health
TailGait Market provides customers with everything a happy pet needs to stay healthy. Offering goodies for both dogs and cats, the store has well researched natural foods, including ingredients for raw diets, and treats such as local cookies from Dancin' Dog and WesMeister Bakeries. And to keep their minds and mouths busy, lots of toys and chewies are available. There's also top line beds, accessories, and grooming supplies.
Nutrition expertise on hand
Fresh quality food and supplements are the specialty at TailGait Market. Andrea, the owner of the shop, has an educational background in nutrition and food science. Coupled with her longtime affinity for training and showing dogs, her valuable knowledge led to her desire to help people improve their pets' lives with healthy food.
Carolina Mornings loves your pet too
Now you can bring the whole family with you on your mountain retreat! Many of the vacation rental properties offered by Carolina Mornings are pet-friendly. We realize that staying at an Asheville hotel, even if it does allow pets, can be inconvenient for pet owners. An Asheville vacation rental cabin gives you the freedom to spoil your pet while away from home, offering yard and deck space for lots of play time. And as we well know, because we, too, have pampered pets, a happy best friend equals a happy human!
A convenient location
The TailGait Market is located just a few blocks off of Interstate 240 in West Asheville. The easiest way to get there is via Patton Avenue, also known as Highway 23/19. You'll find the store just behind the Zaxby's food chain at 328 New Leicester Highway.
