The Indie City Index 2011, which ranks American metropolitan areas based on retail activity generated by independent businesses, favorably ranks Asheville in the top 10 percent of all metro areas. The Indie City Index also shows that Asheville has the lowest chain store saturation of any metro area in North Carolina.
Shopping at independent retailers is catching on nationwide with movements like Shift Your Shopping, a campaign to strengthen local economies, expand employment, and nurture a sense of community. Even credit lenders are keeping up: American Express is sponsoring Small Business Saturday on November 26th, offering a bonus for shopping at independent stores.
