Asheville's HardLox Festival Offers More than Chopped Liver: Jewish Heritage, Music, and Food in Pack Square Park

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the HardLox Jewish Food and Heritage Festival comes to Pack Square Park in downtown Asheville, NC on Sunday, October 21, 2012. Enjoy a day filled with Jewish fun, including Israeli dancing, heritage and craft exhibits, educational resources, a Kids Zone (bouncy castle!), and lively klezmer music. Admission is free and everyone is welcome!

Savor the amazing food, if only for a day

If you've ever visited a Jewish delicatessen and smelled the mouth-watering aroma that wraps around you when you open the door, you know what delights await you at the HardLox Festival. Asheville is bereft of a Jewish delicatessen, so this is your one chance each year to enjoy this centuries-old cuisine. Traditional Jewish foods include pastrami or corned beef on rye, hot Challah bread, steaming matzo ball soup, and lox and cream cheese on a freshly baked bagel. A visit to the potato booth will supply you with handfuls of knishes and latkes, the bakery booth will set you up with rugelach, mandelbrot, and black and white cookies, and there's even a booth dedicated to noodle kugel. Come hungry.

Experience Jewish cultural traditions

Wonder what your name looks like when written in Hebrew? Take home a Jewish keepsake that was made just for you. Originating in the kingdoms of Israel and Judah over 3,000 years ago, the Hebrew language is sacred to the Jewish people and is written in a beautiful, ancient script. The HardLox Festival also offers opportunities to learn about the Torah and Jewish holidays while enjoying klezmer music. Step on up and learn how to dance the Hora and the Yemenite step!

The HardLox festival's local roots

The HardLox Jewish Food and Heritage Festival, hosted by Congregation Beth HaTephila and co-sponsored by the City of Asheville, honors the Jewish community of Asheville and Western North Carolina. An estimated 5,000 Jewish people reside in the area and are represented by over fifteen participating organizations, including the Asheville Jewish Community Center, the Center for Jewish Studies at UNCA, One Jewish Asheville, and the WNC Jewish Federation. Gracious and friendly, the Jewish community welcomes you to experience their unique customs and join in a memorable taste of the old country.
