Asheville Farmer's Markets Season Openings + Ramps Recipe

Springtime means the return of fresh goodies at Asheville area Farmer's Markets! Collards, kale, and chard will be the most prevalent farm fresh foods in season, along with market staples, like local meat, eggs, and honey.

Flowers Aplenty at the Farmer's Market

Get your garden starts and flowers
A great way to get your flower or vegetable garden going is with some locally grown starts. Market will be full of baby tomato and pepper plants, along with herbs and other veggies. And the flowering plants are always a treat to see with their array of colors ready to spruce up your yard! If you're vacationing in the area, stay at a Carolina Morning's vacation rental cabin so you'll have deck or driveway space where you can keep your starts until you head home.

Where and when to go to market
There's a farmer's market for every side of Asheville, and they're all having their season openings in the coming weeks. The French Broad Food Co-op Wednesday Tailgate Market serves the downtown area and opens on April 4th. Asheville City Market is every Saturday on Charlotte Street and opens April 7th. The West Asheville Tailgate Market takes place on Tuesdays on Haywood Street and opens April 10th. For more area listings, visit From Here's website.

Can you handle eating ramps?
Not from around here? Then you may have never heard of ramps, a mountain variety of wild leeks that have long been celebrated by Appalachian residents as one of the first signs spring. Some say ramps are an acquired taste; they have a pungent garlic and onion flavor. You're not likely to find them in the store, but if you come across ramps at a farmer's market, here's a favorite Southern way to eat them:

Ramps: Sticky or Delicious?

Ramps with Bacon
Start with a pound of ramps. Clean and cut the white stem and bulb into bite-size pieces. Boil them in salted water for 3-5 minutes. Meanwhile, fry up some bacon. Remove the bacon from the skillet and dice it. Drain the ramps and then add them to the hot bacon fat. Season with black pepper and fry them until tender. Drain. Mix the ramps up with the diced bacon and serve with eggs and biscuits.

How to Spoil Your Best Friend (a.k.a. Your Dog) in Asheville

Doesn't your dog deserve to have a luxury vacation too? Here's a few of Fido's Asheville favorites.

1. Special Treats - Take your pup shopping downtown! Blaze-N-Skyy Pet Boutique & Wellness Center, just next to the Grove Arcade in downtown Asheville, is the place to shop for designer dogs who desire the latest trends in fashion and accessories. Less than a block away, Three Dog Bakery serves up delicious oven-baked treats for Fido and friends. Then visit the Funky Mutt on Lexington Avenue: your dog will literally be begging for more!

Can I Please Get a Doggie Bag?

2. Spa Day - Lather up with some peppermint shampoo at The Soapy Dog, an open-air self-grooming spot in the River Arts District with giant tubs, handy sprayers, and caring customer service. The Bed & Biscuit in Black Mountain offers a spa-like atmosphere for spoiled dogs - the boarding suites even feature the Animal Planet on a private TV! Or how about a pedicure (painted toenails!) and a massage at Denver's Doggie Day Spa?

3. Exercise - Take a riverside walk at Carrier Park! The whole park is dog-friendly with wide open fields, a playground, and 2.5 miles of paved paths. Plus there's a fenced-in area where dogs can run free that gives your pup a chance to mingle and make some friends.

A Deck Your Dog Will Love

4. Socialize - Kick back with a cold beverage at one of Asheville's dog-friendly outdoor bars. The Bywater on Riverside Drive offers a huge outdoor area with bring-your-own-food grills. Chill on a swing and enjoy a local brew while your dog frolicks in the river. The Wedge, a microbrewery in the River Arts District, is another popular outdoors hangout for pups and their humans. 3rd Annual ActionFest Comes to Asheville in April

Asheville is the place to be for non-stop action from April 12 through 15. For action films, that is! Get your tickets now for the third annual ActionFest in Asheville, North Carolina. ActionFest was named one of the "20 Coolest Film Festivals" by MovieMaker Magazine.

ActionFest draws action film enthusiasts
The four-day festival features dozens of movies, including the exciting premiere of Michael J. Bassett's movie Soloman Kane, as well as Wu Xia, which stars internationally recognized martial arts actor Donnie Yen. There's also an awards ceremony and a main attraction Stunt Show Extravaganza. The popular Carolina Cinema is hosting and has a full bar and munchie menu.

It's all about the action
ActionFest is "the only international film festival devoted exclusively to action cinema and its unsung heroes." Those unsung heros are stunt men and women, fight choreographers, and second unit directors--all the people who put the action in an action film. The 2012 ActionFest Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to stuntman Mickey Gilbert, whose decades long career includes stunts in numerous famous films, including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Blazing Saddles, and The Blues Brothers.

Profits go to Kickstart Kids
ActionFest supports a super cause: Kickstart Kids. In 1990, Chuck Norris and his wife Gena started the children's charity to demonstrate positive living through martial arts training in inner city middle schools. The connection? ActionFest was co-founded by Chuck Norris' brother, Aaron Norris, who is most well known as the executive producer of the hit TV show Walker, Texas Ranger.

Plenty of opportunities for action
Surrounded by the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville is a paradise playground in the spring. When you're done watching action movies, get outside and take a hike or cruise the Blue Ridge Parkway. Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence

The Hunger Games Filmed in WNC
Western North Carolina serves as the backdrop for the movie based on Suzanne Collins' best-selling novel of the same name. The movie was filmed last summer at locations surrounding Asheville, including the Coleman Boundary section of the Pisgah National Forest near Barnardsville.

Visit Asheville and Tour Movie Locations
In the same vein as other recent fantasy successes, such as the Harry Potter and Twilight films, The Hunger Games is becoming a craze that is sure to draw fans and cinema buffs to Asheville throughout the summer tourism season.

Provides Boost to Local Economy
The attention that Hunger Games is receiving is already boosting the local economy, with the North Carolina Film Commission quoting preliminary figures of 62 million dollars being brought into the area. Theater pre-sales of tickets are breaking box office records, with one midnight screening at an Asheville theater sold out nearly a month in advance of the premiere.

This isn't the area's fist taste of big business filmmaking -- "The Last of the Mohicans," "Dirty Dancing," and "Hannibal" were all filmed near Asheville -- but it just may prove to be the biggest attention-getter yet.

Biltmore Gardens in Bloom: Spring Comes to Asheville

Spring blooming season is upon us in Asheville, NC! The gardens at Biltmore Estate are world-renowned for their spectacular show of colors, and April marks the beginning and the best of ornamental flowering splendor. The Biltmore Gardens were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the same celebrated landscape architect who is responsible for such well-known projects as Central Park in New York City and the country's oldest state park, Niagara Falls.

Spectacular Blooms at Biltmore Gardens
In early to mid- April, many varieties of trees transform into full bloom, including fruit tress such as cherry, pear, and apple, as well as the unique flowers of redbud, magnolia, and dogwood trees, whose delicate white bloom is recognized as the North Carolina state flower. Bulb blooming season is another stunning reason to visit the Biltmore Estate during April, with daffodils, tulips, and hyacinths offering guests a full array of color. Then come the azalea bushes, drawing hundreds of butterflies toward the end of April and throughout May! This is one of nature's most vibrant displays: a must see for gardening enthusiasts!
